Groodle coats and sizes
From miniature to standard, woolly to wavy
One of the things we love about the groodle is their variety.
A groodle is a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle, and so they come in a wide range of sizes, coat types and colours.
Understanding the differences can help you work out which groodle might be the best fit for your home and lifestyle.
Colours
Groodle coats come in a range of colours, including gold, cream, red, brown, black and grey.
Some are a solid colour, while others may have markings. Colour can vary wildly even within the same litter!
Coat types
Coat type is influenced by the parent dogs, and while it’s possible to predict to an extent whether a puppy will be low-shedding, it can’t be completely guaranteed and there is variety even within the same litter. There are three main coat types:
Wool coats are curly, dense and textured, with a soft spiral similar to a sheep or lamb’s fleece. They rarely shed and are less likely to trigger allergies, but they can mat and require the most upkeep — weekly brushing and two to three trims a year.
Fleece coats are soft and silky, with a loose wave or gentle curl. They’re less likely to shed or trigger allergies than flat coats, and generally need trimming around twice a year.
Flat coats are straight or slightly wavy, closer to a Golden Retriever’s coat. They’re the lowest maintenance in terms of grooming — a brush once a month is usually enough — but they’re more likely to shed and aren’t recommended for allergy sufferers.

Groodle sizes
Groodle size depends on the poodle parent. Traditionally, the groodle came in two sizes — miniature and standard — but today there are three.
Here’s are their approximate sizes, but individual dogs can surprise us!
- Miniature — 35–42 cm tall, 7–13 kg
- Medium — 43–52 cm tall, 13–20 kg
- Standard — 53–63 cm tall, 23–30 kg
Often a groodle will reach their full size between 12 and 18 months of age. If you’re unsure which size suits your living situation, our team can help guide you — it’s one of the things we consider when matching puppies to families and individuals.
A note on allergy and shedding
The Golden Retriever heritage in every groodle means shedding can never be completely ruled out. If you require absolute certainty of a non-shedding or low-allergy dog, a purebred poodle may be a more suitable choice. That said, many groodle owners — including those with mild allergies — find wool and fleece coats work well for them.
